Richard Tuttle
Venue: The Art Museums of Bergen - Lysverket / Opens: Saturday November 3 at 2pm
Bergen Kunsthall is proud to present the American artist Richard Tuttle’s first solo exhibition in Norway. The exhibition will be held in the Art Museums of Bergens department Lysverket.
In the middle of the 1960s Richard Tuttle established a unique position for himself on the American post-war art scene. Since then he has presented a large number of exhibitions at regular intervals, and his oeuvre has been the object of constantly renewed interest. Tuttle is often described as a post-minimalist, with a background in the artistic milieu in which he first became known; nevertheless Tuttle’s works elude simple characterizations. It is striking to see how his whole oeuvre appears as relevant today as ever in the light of the renewed current interest in formal issues and an orientation towards the meaning-bearing features of materiality in sculpture and painting.

Installations, sculptures and paintings by ten of China’s leading artists.
Over the last 15 years, Chinese contemporary artists have gained phenomenal popularity and recognition in the international art world. Real Life Stories presents, for the first time in Norway, installations, sculptures and paintings by ten of China’s leading artists.
Like an exhibition within an exhibition, the occasion marks the world premiere of a new work by Ai Weiwei. In 2011, ArtReview magazine deemed this artist to be the most powerful figure in the art world, and one of the trendsetters for the international contemporary art scene. Ai Weiwei’s art often deals with themes pertaining to Chinese culture, tradition and craftsmanship, and China’s relationship to the West.
Chief curators: Feng Boyi and Bjørn Inge Follevaag. Co-curators: Erlend Høyersten and Eli Okkenhaug.
The exhibition is produced by Art Museums of Bergen.

Spotlight on the production and collection of objects in a globalized world.
Arts & crafts and museums of the decorative arts are closely related, both originating around 1850 in response to the negative consequences of the industrial revolution – aesthetic decline and alienation from production – referred to by Marx as ‘commodity fetishism’. In contrast craftsmen concerned themselves with every stage of the process from concept to finished product.
Juan Gaitán, curator of the exhibition Material Information – the 2012 thematic exhibition of the Norwegian Arts and Crafts Association, asks why craftsmanship is still dominated by the mindset of the 1800s, while industrial production has been radically updated.
The kind of industrial production that is considered a benchmark of European craftsmanship has almost disappeared from the Western world today. It has been outsourced and fragmented, and its products are global and anonymous.
This exhibition not only poses a challenge to the area of arts and crafts but also to the museum. The artists turn the role of the museum as collector and storyteller upside down, and in doing so deprive the museum of its monopoly over the representation of the objects in its collection and the narratives associated with them.
Material Information brings a set of contemporary practices together in order to present a multiple meditation on the new and old objects of industry.
The exhibition is curated by Juan A. Gaitán, and will take place in three different venues and around the city of Bergen. The main exhibition will take place here, at the Art Museums of Bergen Permanenten between September 28th and January 31st.

The artists examine different aspects and issues of the body in their artistic production. Changes of time, the identification of, appeal for, and even the ideology about the human body explored. The exploration that takes place is not purely private nor purely Chinese, but closely linked to comparable conditions and situations, as well as to the general experience of what it means to be human.

A Neutral, Flexible Structure
Morten Torgersrud For many years Morten Torgersrud has photographed various landscapes in the Barents region and investigated their meaning; from residential areas, architecture and town plans, to the ideological landscape created by certain ideas of geography in older photographs. In the exhibition A neutral, flexible structure it is the economic and abstract landscapes that are investigated through a series of images from this area.

May 23 - June 17 The mind is given to you, you are not given to the mind Monica Winther Du våkner og ser rommet omkring deg. (...)
