Subliminal Operations Rafet Arslan Rafet Arslan thru leaked collages from his operations, his détournements and illustrations invites us with his current interventions to a visual and spiritual journey from daydreams to nightmares, from his outer space to his inner one, from robotic delusions to the verses of alchemy, from surreal to the assumed real and to the age/art of mutants. ‘Subliminal Operations’ more so than being a first exhibition is rather an intimate advice; the artist's strive to build himself and to test our habits by winking at the reconstructed state of situationists.

Reality Terror Periferi Kolektif Periferi Kolektif, scales up the discussion that it initiated with the exhibition Yıkım/Destruction 2011 with new events entitled Gerçeklik Terörü/Reality Terror. The international exhibitions coordinated by Rafet Arslan and Alper T. İnce will be held at the beginning of May in Depo, Mars and Asfalt Kadıköy respectively. With the participation of the team who created Yıkım/Destruction 2011, one of the exhibitions which made a tremendous impression last year, and with participation of 65 artists including 17 from abroad, Gerçeklik Terörü/Reality Terror brings together artists and works from different disciplines again with an independent collective stance without patrons or sponsors.
Gerçeklik Terörü/Reality Terror aims to create a questioning, destructive, poetical language and aesthetics against arts and life in a world where the last traces of reality has been wiped off. Is an existence against the fake realities constructed by the intertwined relations of arts and the market, of media and censorship, of politics and pornography possible?
With its poetical and destructive praxis of contemporary arts, Gerçeklik Terörü/Reality Terror invites you to question your beliefs, to find the world odd - the world that we live in and that we take as real -, to open the doors of new realities, of new possibilities, of other worlds despite all their pessimism.
Triggering a new language, a new aesthetics and even a new evolution for the new consciousness/human, the politics of mutation!

NON Unplugged 2012
Sislei Xhafa
For his first solo show in Istanbul titled NON Unplugged 2012, Kosovan artist Sislej Xhafa turns NON into a key manufacturing space/shop. This exhibition at NON is a site-specific re-edition of the artist’s 2006 exhibition, MN Unplugged 2006, realized in Frankfurt at the Michael Neff gallery for its final show.
In his works, Xhafa questions the forms and attitudes of social, political, and economical realities of current times using a minimal yet subversive language. A common thread running through his works is an ability to provoke the viewer to actively engage with his works while often ironically highlighting the complexity of modern society. (...)

May 18 - June 30 Contraband and An American Index of the Hidden and Unfamiliar
Taryn SimonTaryn Simon’s first solo exhibition in Istanbul. Contraband is an archive of global desires and perceived threats, presenting 1,075 images of items that were detained or seized from entering the United States from abroad. Captured by Simon during five days at JFK International Airport, some of these items are rather familiar, such as knockoff handbags, drugs and Cuban cigars; while others are quite unexpected, such as various animal specimens, eggshells and dog treats.
A selection from An American Index of the Hidden and Unfamiliar, including the U.S. Customs and Border Protection, Contraband Room, which has given rise to the Contraband series, is also displayed at the exhibition. By capturing hidden and inaccessible spaces such as the CIA headquarters and a nuclear waste storage facility, Simon reveals unfamiliar and uncanny aspects of the present day American culture and confronts the divide between expert and public access. The exhibition brings together the works of Aladağ that has not yet been shown in Turkey. Trained as a sculptor at the Fine Arts Academy in Munich Aladağ adopts differing mediums in her works varying from performance to video, photography to sculptures & objects as well as public interventions and site specific installations. She is interested in how cultural and social signs are used and interpreted while employing these signs within her practice and places them in a context where they no longer belong to a specific territory, thus become images and ideas that are equipped with visual rhetoric.

Gökçe Er
artSümer holds the second solo show of Gökçe Er, “ground control”. This time, the figures trapped inside spaces (in her first solo show “get out!”) are out! Out in estranged environments. Er turns the space inside out; she creates characters trapped within and without, between the top and the bottom, like an abrupt creation. Gökçe Er freezes the slipperiness of the ground within the time frame of the picture.

TURKISH DELIGHT Canan
During the 1990’s, the artist preferred to use a realistic language like videos, photography and documentaries, and usually described her body as a figure in the paintings. Then, she started to portray her works as miniatures that are intensive both in the visual representation and symbolism. During the same period, she also positioned herself as the “storyteller," and used collages she made from miniatures, to edit them as video animations with the approach of documentaries and sensation of fairy tales.
